RAILROAD TRAINMASTER
POSITION SUMMARY: This on call position will include system wide coverage, working nights, weekends & holidays as well as travel and rotating rest days. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to management of transportation drug/alcohol regulations, safety and operating rules compliance, efficiency testing, incident investigation & reporting, crew management & training. This position requires a clean driving record as well as at least two years railroad transportation experience. All candidates must be certified, and or in the process of certifying as both a conductor and engineer, at the time of interview. Certifications are to be maintained as a requirement of this position.
JOB DUTIES:
- Manages the operational testing program by observing, documenting, and evaluating safe work practices per GCOR (General Code of Operating Rules), communicating results, and utilizing the elevation process, if necessary.
- May facilitate employee meetings and programs to emphasize safety and discuss safety risks.
- Investigates accidents and incidents, determines root cause, and resolves or escalates.
- Manages crew starts, crew size, and overtime in a cost effective manner.
- May serve as a first responder to critical incidents.
- May make recommendations regarding hiring, performance, and termination of staff.
- Grows relationships and is an effective partner through strong daily communication with Mechanical, Engineering, Signaling, Dispatching, and foreign line carriers.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred.
Experience: 2 years railroad transportation/operations
Skills: Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office products. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of labor agreements preferred. Must have thorough knowledge of railroad operations, including but not limited to: transportation, maintenance of way, mechanical and clerical activities. Knowledge of FRA requirements specific to the operation and movement of trains. Knowledge, understanding and compliance of safety and internal policies and procedures. Must use all equipment, tools, resources, and company automobiles in a safe and responsible manner. Must use extremely sound judgment when complying with federal regulations that apply to the operation of trains. Must be able to successfully pass operating rules examination.
Physical Demands: Climbing ladders, boarding freight cars, operating track switches, inspecting cars and using radio communications to control train movement. Employee must be able to push, pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently; up to 50 pounds occasionally; and, up to 85 pounds infrequently. Employee must have good balance to regularly step on and off equipment and work from ladders to perform various tasks. Position involves extensive walking, sitting, standing and stooping. Trainmasters work outdoors in all weather conditions and frequently at elevations more than 12’ above ground.
Vehicle/Driving License: Must have a valid driver’s license with no more than 3 violations in the last 3 years and no major violations (i.e. reckless operations or OWI’s). Must have own transportation and be able to travel.
Drug/Alcohol Testing: Trainmasters are subject to random alcohol and drug testing as per the Federal Railroad Administration Guidelines.
CANDIDATES MUST:
- Be willing to relocate (home base location will be discussed during the interview process)
- Have supervisory experience managing a group of 5-30 employees, working in a safety-conscious and results-focused environment
- Possess strong leadership skills along with a proven track record in an industrial environment
- Be able to manage a team of employees with varied trades and direct work planning and workforce deployment
- Promote safety in the workplace and have proven experience in managing and improving workplace safety
- Be able to work various shifts, including weekends, and able to support an operation that runs 7 days a week, 24hours a day
- Be able to work outdoors in all types of weather
- Be able to work away from home frequently
- Be able to communicate fluently in English both orally and in writing
