Job Summary

*This is a temporary, 6 months, non-benefited position.*

Reporting to the Senior Director for Creative Strategy, the Senior Visual Designer and Art Director is a key member of the strategic communications and marketing team (Stratcom), involved in making recommendations and developing the direction and campus-wide adoption of the university brand identity. The position provides design expertise, creative skills, and awareness of the university's brand identity, mission and vision. Working independently, under general direction, the incumbent is responsible for day-to-day graphic design operations and for the execution and development of communications and marketing materials. The incumbent develops, designs and produces a wide range of concepts and materials, which involves a variety of integrated steps and processes, and requires extensive knowledge of specialized, multi-faceted design theory, processes and media. Part of the Office of the President, Strategic Communications and Marketing is responsible for the university's overall marketing, communications and branding initiatives. A highly visible and important aspect of our work is the compelling and consistent presentation of the university and its key messages in print and electronic media. Stratcom creates marketing, communications and publications strategies, develops and implements plans and objectives, sets style guidelines for university communications, produces high-level university publications, works with campus offices and departments to advise and assist them in producing appropriate multimedia materials, and monitors campus-wide compliance with the objectives and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serves as a key strategist and creative thinker in conceptualizing the university's communications and marketing initiatives; ensures that all design projects are integrated within the university's brand identity.
  • Defines design criteria, develops graphic design concepts, and presents them for review by the client or management.
  • Working with the core creative team, makes recommendations to produce, and continually evolve and improve, the university storytelling editorial and the magazine (Washington Square) in terms of concept, strategy, vision, and visual design.
  • Provides creative/design direction, design and production for the magazine both virtual and when printed.
  • Working with the core creative team, makes recommendations to produce, and continually evolve and improve campaign and fundraising collateral in terms of concept, strategy, vision, and visual design.
  • Provides design direction for campus wide campaign/fundraising collateral and university promotional image-making effective across digital and physical platforms. Coordinates and art-directs (as needed) the services of freelance designers, photographers, illustrators, UI designers, student help and vendors such as pre-press services, printers and mail houses.
  • Creates concept compositions, graphic designs and layouts; refines final designs to meet the constraints of budgets, deadlines and client and/or management expectations.
  • Prepares or directs the preparations of final design files for production.
  • Identifies, selects and coordinates vendors for printing and production services, as appropriate to the project, including printers, other designers, marketing specialists and others to ensure the successful completion of projects, on time and on budget.
  • Provides technical advice and guidance, and serves as liaison with production personnel, publishers, clients and others involved with the project. Participates in or directs production and/or printing and mailing on a project basis.
  • Advises and assists campus stakeholders on effective planning and execution of their own creative projects, as needed.
  • Collaborates effectively with production manager on campus wide service needs such as populating the online portal ordering system with new designs.
  • Provides marketing, graphic design and technical support to campus committees responsible for planning and coordinating such functions as Homecoming, Commencement and other special events.
  • Serves as a key member of the university communications team that makes decisions shaping the university brand identity; functions as strategist, analyst, art director, creator and monitor of communications and marketing initiatives as they convey the brand.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining professional standards for the visual university's brand, which serves as the foundation for the university's ongoing communications and marketing initiatives.
  • Oversees the university's official visual brand-identity guidelines, as well as the use of the university logo, seal, lockups and other official images, for consistency of style, implementation and usage. 
  • Provides broad creative direction and creative oversight within the Marketing and Communications design team, facilitating creative collaboration among designers and ensuring cohesive execution of a wide range of print, online, mobile and video materials.
  • Engages campus departments and divisions to develop proactive strategies to improve the adoption and implementation of the university's brand identity. (For example, create new guidelines for sub-brands as they come up.)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of visual design theory including composition, color, hierarchy and typography
  • Expert skills and knowledge in graphic design practice, including project planning, art direction, layout, prepress production, ink and paper selection, digital and offset printing, etc.
  • Extensive knowledge of offset and digital printing, paper selection, press checks, and color correction
  • Advanced proficiency with InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator (Adobe Creative Suite expert)
  • Knowledge of marketing principles and practice as they relate to print and electronic communications
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, HTML
  • Ability to create complementary print and online materials
  • Strong consultative and persuasive skills in presenting branding and design concepts to clients and partners
  • Strong art direction, project planning and project management skills
  • Expert knowledge of multi-page publications with a variety of audiences
  • Expert ability to conceptualize and execute integrated print and web elements of hybrid projects
  • Ability to collaborate with other designers and creative team members

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training
  • Six years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • BFA design degree, MFA, marketing or project management certificates or the equivalent graphic design degree program
  • Creative brand/identity management experience
  • Type design, visual storytelling, storyscaping/event experiential, advanced design directorship, collaborative relationship management, management of freelance designers/illustrators experience
  • Experience creating graphic resources and designing across multiple digital environments including web, mobile, digital and video; mentoring junior designers


Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist - Exempt III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,500/month - $8,000/month

Hiring Range: $5,908/month - $11,481/month
